About the Artist
Artistic expression has been a part of my being since I can remember. Even though my world growing up was isolated and small, the nature around me was plenty; wild, raw, exuberant! Everything I could ever need to feed my imagination was out there in all-year-round tropical greens, reds, yellows, and arrays of pink forming visions across the cielo. In those early years immersed in nature and not much else, in the remote Colombian town in which I was born, I enjoyed painting things to illustrate my own made-up stories or fairy tales. Triangular shapes were mountains, and a simple straight line would do for a dusty road, connecting me in dreams to a faraway city of wonders. A few silky ribbons were perfect rainbows and paper boats put to dance in the rain, were canoes crossing the nearby Magdalena River.

For many years in my life, I went in directions that didn’t directly or formally involve the arts. Law school and early marriage with children, all seemingly happening at once, deviated my early dreams of becoming a full-time artist, but my passion for art persisted. I was continuously drawing, painting, experimenting, and learning. At any chance I would enlist myself in local art classes, mostly one-on-one learning/practice sessions with wonderful Colombian Maestros.
Artist Statement
My work as an artist today, I think was influenced by that past bucolic frugal life, in that most of what I ever
wanted to play with as a child, I would happily make for myself, transforming the simplest objects I could find around. Traces of such memories or recuerdos inevitably infuse my artwork; frugality and vivid simplicity in my style, conveying a sense of resilience, hope, resourcefulness.
In the creative process I intuitively evoke subjects of empathy, unity and connectedness; however, in the
finished work such inner dissertations not necessarily become apparent right away. Unassuming and light, my work in abstract tends to convey joy and harmony, instead of drama, clutter or turmoil — mentally and physically. Minimalism with a strong orderly asymmetric abstraction to visualize and absorb, amidst the visual and mental noise of everyday.
I generally use acrylics, ink, natural pigments, color pencils and clay. When working with wooden pieces I like to find them raw, so that I get to enjoy the process of transforming them with care, to a desirable texture and look. Also, I like to mix or create my own colors and see the reaction/effects of their interaction on fabric, paper, canvas, linen or wood. Every new project is the start with excitement of a laboring process I can’t resist until seeing it complete, and I apply myself to work every piece with profound sense of duty but playful intensity.
